Canals & Rivers of Bangkok
Canals of Bangkok Author: Torox (public domain)
There is good reason why Bangkok was once known as the Venice of the East. The city relied on its many canals, called khlong, for transportation. Today although many of the canals have been filled in, there are still a number that are visible and in use. You can take ferry boats on these canals as a form of city transport.
The following are some of the canals in Bangkok that I have documented.
- Chao Phraya River
The mother of all Thai rivers, this is the main river that flows through Bangkok.
- Khlong Bang Lamphu
The northern part of the second of three concentric canals of medieval Bangkok.
- Khlong Lord
The innermost of the three ring canals that were carved to demarcate medieval Bangkok.
- Khlong Mahachai
The innermost of the three ring canals that were carved to demarcate medieval Bangkok.
- Khlong Ong Ang
The southern part of the second of three concentric canals of medieval Bangkok.
- Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem
The third of the three concentric canals of medieval Bangkok.
- Khlong Saen Saeb
Major waterway in downtown Bangkok.
