Chanthaburi Province, Thailand
Chanthaburi Province is a province on the eastern part of Thailand. It covers 6,338 sq km (2,447 sq mi). Chanthaburi Province is bordered by Chachoengsao Province to the northwest, Sa Kaeo Province to the north, Rayong Province to the west, Trat Province to the southeast and Cambodia to the east. The highest point in the province is the 1556m Soi Dao Nua peak.
Chanthaburi Province today has a population of about 480,000 (2011 estimate). It was occupied by the French from 1893, following the Paknam Crisis, to 1905, when Thailand relinquished ownership of the western portion of Cambodia. The province has a substantial number of Vietnamese who are Catholics. They sought refuge there during the anti-Catholic persecution of Cochin China between the 1920's and 1940's.
