Golden Triangle
Sop Ruak, Junction of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar

The Golden Triangle is located at the junction of three countries, Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. On the Thai side, it is closest to the town of Sop Ruak in Chiang Saen, where you can stand at the banks of the Mekong and view the "Golden Triangle" signboard. This is an exercise entirely given over the commercialism and tourism. The view across the Mekong from Sop Ruak has Myanmar on the left (where a casino entices day-trippers over) side of the Mekong river, and Laos on the right.
On the southern edge of Sop Ruak is the simple-looking Opium Museum, also called House of Opium, where you can learn about this history as well as distribution of this drug. Also on display are the implements used for smoking and preparing opium.
The confluence of the Mekong with the Ruak (at left) is regarded as the meeting point of the Golden Triangle.
