Kathu, Phuket
Kathu is a district in South Central Phuket. The name is believed to have originated from the Malay name Kuala Batu, meaning "stoney estuary".
In the mid 19th century Kathu was one of the major tin-mining areas in Phuket. During that time it was settled mainly by Chinese miners. A few villages established in the area, namely Ban Kathu, Ban Bang Thong and Ban Ket Ho, were all originally Chinese villages for the miners.
Today however Kathu has been turned into a housing area, a sort of suburb for people working in either Patong Beach or Phuket City, as it happens to be located midday between the two.
