The opening of the new terminal for Khon Kaen Airport in 2005 means that visitors can now travel more comfortably to reach the city.
To be honest, Khon Kaen lacks tourist attractions compared to more developed cities such as Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai. It does have a big shopping mall, the Central Plaza Khon Kaen, which opened in December, 2009. Also, you can find a few notesworthy Buddhist temples.
Budget Travel to Khon Kaen
You can fly by Thai Airways to Khon Kaen three times a day. SGA Airlines also flies there from Chiang Mai. You can also take a bus to Khon Kaen, departing from the Mo Chit Bus Terminal, but it will be a very long journey.
Budget Travel within Khon Kaen
There are numbered songthaews (passenger pick-up trucks) that take commuters places for ฿10 per person per ride. Otherwise you can hail a tuk tuk for about ฿50 to go anywhere. If you find a reliable and friendly tuk tuk driver, negotiate to use him for the whole day.
