Introducing Khon Kaen

Khon Kaen Budget Travel Guide provides you an introduction to this city in northeastern Thailand. I write this guide specially for the benefit of people who are keen to go there. Listed on this page are places of interest in Khon Kaen that you might want to visit when you are there.

About Khon Kaen

Khon Kaen is the capital of Isaan region in northeastern Thailand. Once the centre of the poorest region of the country, Khon Kaen has developed rapidly in the last decade. Being the base for development projects in northeastern Thailand, Khon Kaen now has the biggest university in Isaan, its own television studios, modern hotels, and a number of new shopping centres.

The opening of the new terminal for Khon Kaen Airport in 2005 means that visitors can now travel more comfortably to reach the city.

To be honest, Khon Kaen lacks tourist attractions compared to more developed cities such as Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai. It does have a big shopping mall, the Central Plaza Khon Kaen, which opened in December, 2009. Also, you can find a few notesworthy Buddhist temples.

Budget Travel to Khon Kaen

You can fly by Thai Airways to Khon Kaen three times a day. SGA Airlines also flies there from Chiang Mai. You can also take a bus to Khon Kaen, departing from the Mo Chit Bus Terminal, but it will be a very long journey.

Budget Travel within Khon Kaen

There are numbered songthaews (passenger pick-up trucks) that take commuters places for ฿10 per person per ride. Otherwise you can hail a tuk tuk for about ฿50 to go anywhere. If you find a reliable and friendly tuk tuk driver, negotiate to use him for the whole day.
