Lampang Province is a province in the northern region of Thailand. It is 12,534 sq km (4,839.4 sq mi) in area, making it the 10th biggest province out of the 76 in the kingdom. Lampang Province has a population of 785,000 (2011 estimate), placing it in 29th position. The provincial capital is the city of Lampang.

Lampang Province is located in the valley of the Wang River with mountain ranges on either sides. The northern part of the province is mountainous, with 1697m Doi Luang being one of the peaks.

Lampang Province has been settled since the 7th century, when it was part of the Haripunchai Kingdom of the Mon people.

Budget Travel to Lampang

You can reach Lampang by train either from Bangkok or Chiang Mai. The journey from Bangkok will consume 10 to 12 hours. An air-conditioned sleeper ticket fare is around ฿800. From Chiang Mai, it takes about 2 hours and costs ฿100.

You can also take a bus from Bangkok's Mo Chit bus terminal. A first-class air condition bus fare is around ฿450 and takes 8-9 hours to reach Lampang. From Chiang Mai, the bus journey takes about 1.5 hours and costs ฿80.

    Buddhist temple built by the Burmese during the reign of King Rama IV. It has a golden stupa holding a holy relic brought from Myanmar in around 1906.
  6. Wat Phra That Lampang Luang
    One of the most magnificent Buddhist temples in Lampang.

  7. Wat Phra That Mon Phaya Chae
    Hillside Buddhist temple with a panoramic view of Lampang.

  8. Wat Si Rong Mueang
    Buddhist temple built in 1905, with the viharn (ordination hall) made of wood, and with its gables in the Burmese style.
