Narathiwat Province is a province in South Thailand. It covers an area of 4,475 sq km (1,728 sq mi) and has a population of 663,000 (2011 estimate). Narathiwat Province is bordered by Pattani Province to the northwest, Yala Province to the west, and the state of Kelantan in Malaysia to the south. The town of Narathiwat is the provincial capital.
Narathiwat Province is located 1,140 km to the south of Bangkok. It is one of the less developed provinces of the country, and is still 75% forest clad. The Sankalakhiri mountain range is in the provinde, with the Budo-Sungai Padi National Park.
Narathiwat Province was historically part of the Sultanate of Pattani which paid tribute to the Kingdoms of Siam in Sukhothai and Ayutthaya. It briefly gained its independence in 1767 with the fall of Ayutthaya, but was re-absorbed into Siam 20 years later. The population of the province is predominantly Muslim, accounting for 82% of the population.
