[an error occurred while processing this directive] The House of Opium is a small, unassuming, and yet information museum dedicated to its namesake. Of all place, it is located in the town of Sop Ruak, right on the Golden Triangle in Thailand.

All that you need to know about opium - and some that you really don't - is carefully documented in this museum. You will, for example, learn the history of opium, its scientific name, Papaver somniferum, how heroin is extracted, and everything else about opium that makes the Golden Triangle notorious. Showcased are pipes that were used in smoking opium.

In addition to opium, there is also some information in the House of Opium about the Padaung people, also called the long-neck people.

I visited the House of Opium when I explored the Golden Triangle area with some friends who are now AsiaExplorers members. Although I am not particularly keen to learn about opium, I must acknowledge that the House of Opium is a more interesting museum.
