Ranong is a town on the Isthmus of Kra. It faces the Andaman Sea on the west coast, a short distance from the Myanmar border, where the town of Kawthaung (formerly known as Victoria Point) is located. Ranong is about half way between Bangkok and the Malaysian border at Bukit Kayu Hitam.

More about Ranong

The town of Ranong was one of the many tin mining areas in southern Thailand in the early part of the 20th century. Many of the settlers here were Chinese from the Hokkien dialect group. The town has a few attractions of its own, although most people come here on their way to Kawthaung, to visit the only casino in Myanmar.

Budget Travel to Ranong

The nearest train station to Ranong is at Chumphon. There are a number of buses from Bangkok to Ranong. You can also get there by bus from Surat Thani, Phuket and Krabi.

As with most small towns in Thailand, the usual mode of transportation are the songthaews and tuk-tuks.

Places of Interest in Ranong

  1. Kawthaung
    Town across from the border in Myanmar famous for its seafood and the only casino in Myanmar.

  2. Khao Fa Chi
    "Food Cover Hill", so named because it resembles the shape of the traditional food cover.

  3. Laem Son National Park
    Marine national park along 60 km of the coast and includes some 15 islands.

  4. Ngao Mangrove Research Center
    Mangrove forest research centre some 15 km from Ranong town.

  5. Ngao Waterfall
    A big waterfall within the Tanaosri mountain range.

  6. Phu Khao Ya
    "Grass Hill", also called Khao Hua Lan (Bald Hill), a hill without any trees.

  7. Punyaban Waterfall
    A moderate-sized waterfall in the forest in Ranong.

  8. Raksa Warin Arboretum
    Arboteum and hot spring area visited by King Rama V in 1890.

  9. Wat Hat Som Pean
    Buddhist temple beside the Khlong Hat Som Pean canal.
