The province of Samut Sakhon covers an area of 872.3 sq km and has a population of 466,000. The administrative center, also called Samut Sakhon, is a city of 55,000 located some 28 km from Bangkok. It was formerly known as Tha Chin, the same name as the river. The locals also call it Mahachai, after the Mahachai canal that meets the river at the city.
The name Samut Sakhon comes from two Sanskit words now in Thai, samudra meaning ocean, and sagara meaning lake. The province is located at the mouth of the Tha Chin River, a distributary of the Chao Phraya River. The coastal areas of Samut Sakhon is a major sea salt production area of Thailand.
Samut Sakhon was named by King Mongkut in the 19th century. However, the area has been settled as early as the 16th century, when there was an ancient city here by the name of Sakhon Buri. It was renamed Mahachai in 1704, after the Khlong Mahachai canal was dug to connect the city with the Tha Chin River.

Without your own transport, you can also reach Samut Sakhon by bus and train. There are air-conditioned buses from Bangkok leaving the Southern Bus Terminal at Borommaratchachonnani Road for Samut Sakhon.
There are trains from Wongwian Yai Station to Mahachai Station in Samut Sakhon. Alternatively you can also take the train from Ban Laem Station to Mae Klong Station in Samut Songkhram.
