Suphan Buri is a town and capital of Suphan Buri Province in Central Thailand. It has a population of around 111,000. The name comes from the Sanskrit words of "suvarna" and "puri", and means "City of Gold". According to ancient chronicles, it was founded around AD877-882. During the rise of Ayutthaya in the 14th, it became known as U Thong, as it was the residence of Prince U Thong, also called Ramathibodi I, who founded the Ayutthaya Kingdom.

The town of Suphan Buri has so far few outside tourists, despite the attractive architecture of some of its buildings. Near the center of the town is Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat. At the edge of town is another Buddhist temple, Wat Pa Lelai, which has a Buddha statue from the Dvaravati period. Also on the east is the Chinese shrine called San Chao Pho Lak Muang.

On the other side of the Suphan Buri River is Wat Phra Rup. It has a reclining Buddha and one of the many stylized Buddha footprints you may come across in Thailand. At nearby Wat Pratu San is a 19th century mural on the life of the Buddha.

31km (20 mi) from Suphan Buri is a monument known as Don Chedi. It marks the Battle of Nong Sarai in 1558 between the Burmese and Siamese under King Naresuan, leading to the independence of Ayutthaya from the Burmese.

Also at Suphan Buri is the U Thong National Museum. It houses ancient artifacts such as specimens from the Dvaravati period (6th to 11th century), as well as Khmer art that was discovered in the area.

Budget Travel to Suphan Buri

You can reach Suphan Buri by bus from Bangkok's Northern Bus Terminal at Mochit II. There are also buses leaving from the Southern Bus Terminal on Boromma Ratchachonnani Road for Suphan Buri.

Trains for Suphan Buri leaves Bangkok's Hualamphong Railway Station at 4:40 pm and arrives at 7:30 pm. The train from Suphan Buri leaves at 5:00 am and reaches Bangkok at 8:10 am.
