Thalang is one of the former administrative centre of Phuket. This was during the 17th century, during the Kingdom of Ayutthaya, before Phuket City developed. At that time, the Thalang area was the choice location for settlement, as it has good land for irrigation and rice cultivation.

The former English name for Phuket, Jung Ceylon, is believed to have been derived from Thalang. The name Thalang itself is probably derived from the various forms of Malay name for Phuket including Tanjong Salang and Ujong Salang, both meaning Cape Salang.

Today Thalang appears to be just another Thai town in Phuket. The main road through town is Highway 402. Visitors passing this way may be interested to pay a visit to two of its sights, Ton Sai Falls and Khao Pra Taew Wildlife Park.
