Unesco World Heritage Sites in Asia that have been explored and documented by AsiaExplorers are listed on this page. World Heritage Sites are places in the world that have been nominated and confirmed to be included in a special list maintained by the World Heritage Programme administered by Unesco World Heritage Committee. The programme was founded with the Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. It was adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO on 16 November 1972. Since then, 182 State Parties have ratified the convention. At time of writing (2006), 830 sites comprising 644 cultural, 162 natural and 24 mixed properties, in 138 countries, have been ascribed World Heritage Site recognition.
Places that can be included as World Heritage Sites include buildings, whole towns and cities, forests, mountains, lakes, and other geographical entities that exhibit outstanding cultural and natural importance contributing to the common heritage of mankind.
Inscription into Unesco's World Heritage List is regarded as the highest recognition any site of natural, cultural and heritage significance can aspire of achieve. In addition to the prestige and tourist dollars that come from World Heritage recognition is, under certain conditions, the possibility of securing funds from the World Heritage Fund.
