Cà Mau is the city in the eponymous province on the southernmost part of mainland Vietnam. Cà Mau covers 250.3 sq km (96.6 sq mi) and has a population of 205,000 people (2011 estimate). It is home to Vietnam's present prime minister, Nguyen Tan Dung.

The land where Cà Mau is located has been inhabited for over a thousand years. The area was part of the Kingdom of Funan around the 1st century AD. Later it was part of the Chan La Kingdom and the Khmer Empire.

 Today Cà Mau is a rapidly developing town. It is the biggest shrimp exporter for Vietnam. Apart from that, it also has a huge fertilizer plant and two thermal power plants. The town is also developing itself as a major tourist destination. Among the sights here include bird sanctuaries, mangrove forest and Khmer ruins.

Visiting Cà Mau

Take a bus from Ho Chi Minh City to reach Cà Mau. It takes about 10 hours.
