Jade Emperor Pagoda is one of the most important Chinese temples in Ho Chi Minh City. It was built in 1909 by the Cantonese community in the city for the worship of Ngoc Huang, also known as the Jade Emperor or the King of all Heavens. This is the chief deity of the Taoist pantheon.

The Jade Emperor Pagoda is a temple complex with intricate roof tiles and roof decorations. The walls are a plain red color. There are gilded images of deities inside the temple, and every spare surface is well embellished with tiles and carvings.

The temple has many different chambers. As you approach it, you will pass the Outer Courtyard with an ancient banyan tree. There is a turtule pond and park benches here. To the side is a tortoise shelter. Tortoises are said to bring good luck in Vietnam.

One of the main altars in the temple is that of Phat Mau Chuan De, or the Mother of Five Buddhas. This Hindu-style effigy is flanked by her five offsprings. There is also a Hall of Ten Hells, where you find the statue of the King of Hell with his life-size horse head. Within the Main Sanctuary of the temple is the image of the Jade Emperor attended by guardians.

73 Mai Thi Luu Street, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City. If you are coming here by taxi, it would be wise to ask the taxi to wait, or to arrange for him to come and pick you up, as it may be difficult to hail a taxi from here.
