Lạng Sơn is a small city in the Vietnamese far north. Capital of the eponymous province, it covers 79 sq km (30.5 sq mi) and has a population of 150,000 people (2011 estimate).

Lạng Sơn was during 214 BC the southernmost city of the Chinese Qin Dynasty. It was from here the the Qin emperor Qin Shi Huang ordered his troops to occupy northern Vietnam. Due to its geographical position, Lạng Sơn is the gateway through which invading armies entered Vietnam. Due to this, it was occupied by the Chinese and the French during the 19th century. Then in the Second World War, it was the stage where the French battled the Japanese.

Visiting Lạng Sơn

You can reach Lạng Sơn by taking a bus or a train from Hanoi. National Road 1A connects it with the Vietnamese capital.
