About My Tho
My Tho is a city in the Mekong Delta in Southern Vietnam. It has a population of 160,000 people. The city was founded in the 1680's by Chinese refugees who were supporters of restoring the Ming dynasty. After they were ejected out of Taiwan by the Manchu forces of the Qing Dynasty, they resettled here in the Mekong Delta. The area was once part of the Khmer Kingdom, but was annexed into Vietnam in the 18th century.

Today My Tho serves as the capital of Tien Giang Province. Many of its inhabitants are Chinese of the Teochew and Hokkien (Minnan) dialect groups. It has a vibrant economy based on fishing and agricultural products, and is investing in tourism. My Tho is going to be the venue of the Miss World pagent for 2011 and 2012.
The city of My Tho has elegant tree-lined boulevards At the waterfront is a busy market place where you can watch boats and barges coming in laden with goods and country products.
Going to and around My Tho
You can reach My Tho by bus from Ho Chi Minh City. To move about the city, you can take the motorcycle taxis for around 10,000 per trip.
