About Noi Bai International Airport

Noi Bai International Airport is the principal airport serving Hanoi. It is located in Soc Son District, some 35 km north of Hanoi. The airport receives about 3.5 million passengers in 2006, making it about the same size as Penang International Airport.

You can take a taxi from the airport to the city centre. Vietnam Airlines also operates a shuttle bus to their Hanoi office. It costs US$4 to take the shuttle bus. You can get your hotel/guesthouse to arrange your transport for you. The hotel I stayed in did this for me, when I arrived with a small group of AsiaExplorers members, so we did not have to go through the hassle of finding our own way to our hotel.

Getting to Hanoi

From Noi Bai International Airport, you can reach Hanoi by taxi, public buses and shuttle buses.

  • Taxis to downtown Hanoi will cost you around US$14 to US$18, the same for taking a taxi from Hanoi to airport. The journey will be between 35-70 minutes, depending on traffic. At the airport, you will come across taxi drivers who may want to deliver you to a hotel of their choice to collect a commission, but if you insist, they usually give in. Otherwise, take another taxi. It is cheaper if you pay in dong, and the exchange rate won't work to your advantage.

  • Public buses from airport to Hanoi charge 5000 dong and take about an hour. Bus #07 crosses the Thang Long bridge and goes to the Daewoo Hotel on the western part of Hanoi. Bus #17 crosses the Chuong Duong bridge and goes close to the old quarter.

  • Vietnam Airlines provide shuttle minibus from the airport to the Vietnam Airlines office in Hanoi and vice versa. The fare is US$2.00. The driver will give you trouble if you have additional bags, but if you push, you will get the same US$2 rate. The shuttle service will often offer to take you direct to your hotel for an extra dollar once they reach the Vietnam Airlines office. This is purely voluntary, but experience says the drivers are fairly trustworthy and for the new arrival is a good way to get direct to the door. Do check that your hotel isn't a mere two minutes' walk away! Shuttle-buses to the airport depart from opposite the Vietnam Airlines Office on Quang Trung. Tickets cost US$2.00 and are sold in the building in front of which the minibuses park.
