One Pillar Pagoda of Thu Duc is a small temple, the size of a shrine, that stands on one pillar. It looks very much like a Thai spirit shrine, but is modelled after the One Pillar Pagoda of Hanoi, which is also known as the Lien Phai Pagoda.
The One Pillar Pagoda of Thu Duc was founded by monks from Lien Phai Pagoda who fled from Hanoi following the partition of Vietnam. However, they did not find much relief in the non-communist south, as the Catholic President of South Vietnam did everything to destroy non-Catholic places of worship. However, support from the locals provided the monks protection and eventually the pagoda remains safe.
Just like Lien Phai Pagoda, the One Pillar Pagoda of Thu Duc stands on a pillar over a pond. There is a small staircase leading from the edge of the pond to the temple entrance. Inside the pagoda is a low altar and little in the way of decoration.
