Vinh is a coastal city in northern Vietnam. With a population of 435,000 prople (2011 estimate), it is one of the major cities in Vietnam.
The modern city of Vinh was founded in 1789. The area has been inhabited since ancient times. The earliest settlement here was called Ke Van. Over the centuries, different cities have appeared, including Ke Vinh, Vinh Giang, Vinh Doanh and Vinh Thi. The present city, named in 1789, is regarded as the gateway to southern Vietnam. It served as the capital of the shortlived Tay Son Dynasty (1788 to 1802).

Vinh developed under French administration, becoming a regional industrial center. The city suffered extensive damage in the First Indochina War and subsequently the Vietnam War, both of which erased much of the city's historic buildings. After the war, Vinh was reconstructed in the Socialist manner, with drab Stalinist architecture and rows of nondescript apartment blocks.
Today, as the country entered a more market-based economy, it has opened itself as a growing travel destination. There are a number of attractions here that may be worth a second glance.

You can reach Vinh by bus from Hanoi and Hue. You can also take the train here from Dong Hoi.
