Vung Tau is a seaside town located some 130 km (81 mi) to the east of Ho Chi Minh City. During colonial times, it was known as Cap St Jacques, as it is located at the tip of a peninsula. It was a popular sea resort, and while it is still very popular today, the quality of the water has deteriorated, due to development and offshore oil industry.

The beach at Vung Tau can get quite crowded during weekends, when the people of Ho Chi Minh City descend on it. If you wish to visit it, and have the place to yourself, go during a workday. The two main beaches in Vung Tau are Bai Truoc and Bai Sau. Of the two, Bai Truoc is better developed, with a good concentration of hotels and restaurants. Bai Sai is less developed and is therefore quieter.

Not far away from Vung Tau are two promontories. They are called Nui Lon, meaning Big Mountain, and Nui Nho, meaning Little Mountain. You can get scenic views from both of them. At Nui Nho there is even a giant statue of Jesus. Another vantage point in the area is the Vung Tau Lighthouse, located about a mile from the ferry landing place.

Emperor Thanh Thai lived in Vung Tau under house arrest from the French. His residence, called Bach Dinh or White Villa, is today the local museum.
